![]() How Boat Things Work: An Illustrated Guide Average Rating: 4.0 Total Reviews: 8 More Information Not so Technical and Plenty Informative Mr. Wing covers it all, engines, transmissions, steering systems, windvanes, auto pilots, anchors, windlasses, pumps, boat heads, fresh water systems and so much more in this illustrated tour of an average cruising boat. If you live afloat then this is an indispensable book for you, one youll go to often, both for enjoyment, because it is beautifully done, and for an education into how the various systems, machines, thing-a-ma-bobs and do-dads do their jobs on your boat. Just how does that bilge pump work? Its in there. That and just about anything else you can imagine. In conclusion Id say that even if nothings broke, this is a good book to browse through with a sundowner. Not so technical and plenty informative and enjoyable. And besides, wouldnt you really be a lot better of out there if you knew how all the stuff on your boat actually worked? When in doubt They say "when in doubt, read the directions" But I hate to read directions! Now when I am in doubt I first look at this book. The illustrations are FANTASTIC. If your a boat owner you need this. This book has everything in it and he can explain thing so you can understand what hes talking about. Great book. Best book for understanding, well, how boat things work The exploded images and simple explanations are just what I needed, being less than mechanically inclined but wanting to work on my 47 catamaran myself. Knowing what has gone wrong and why is invaluable to me. The author has a knack for writing clearly and getting to the point. Necessary precursor to Nigel Calders bible, at least for the novice. Worth much more than the purchase price. Good Book We are weekend sailors and I found the book useful in describing how many of the boat systems work and terminology. Good illustrations and easy to understand explanations make it useful for the novice sailor. Excellent Quick Reference A useful concise reference, and a pleasurable read. The illustrations alone are worth the price of the book. Ive been a sailboat owner since 2002 - and lived aboard for many years. This book is a good companion to Nigel Calders Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual. Great explanations As we have gone through the process of bare boat chartering certification, I have always gotten the majority of the education. My wife tried to learn enough to pass the tests, and keep me out of trouble. But this book has opened her eyes! She now expects to be able to actually understand the different boat systems, and retain knowledge past the test. This is amazing because she is also a teacher herself. Very well presented, with clear written descriptions, and many excellent illustrations. This is an excellent teaching tool. "...not what I expected...or needed". this is an excellent manual...if you are a sailboater. I am a power boater and this manual is about 75% sailboat oriented. I looked it over and gave it to a sailboat friend...he was thrilled with it. |
